Slam - The GameObjectiveThe objective in Slam is to clear each level of bricks by smashing them with a ball. The player controls a bat which rotates around the inside of a circular arena, the bricks being in the centre of the arena. The camera follows the bat from above the arena, and gives an almost top-down viewpoint. The player can tilt the bat to angle shots and to flick the ball like a pinball flipper. The bat also has a limited-time magnet on it which can be used to bend the path of the ball, and to capture it for brief periods of time. Along with the tilt feature, this gives unprecedented control of the ball’s trajectory. The levels have a timer, which continuously ticks down. Every time the ball strikes the inside of the arena, a chunk of time is lost. If the timer runs out, the player loses a life and has to restart the level. The player starts with three lives. CombosIn addition to the timer, there’s a “combo meter”. Each bounce of the ball increases the combo meter – filling the bar results in the score multiplier increasing, up to a factor of twenty for massive scores. If the player misses the ball and lets it hit the arena, the combo meter falls back down. Power-upsWhen bricks are smashed, power-ups are sometimes left behind. These radiate out of the arena, and can be collected by the bat. The power-ups are colour coded: red for bat power-ups, yellow for environment power-ups and blue for ball power-ups. Pressing the X, Y or B button activates the appropriately-coloured power-up. Additionally, sometimes crystal shards are left behind – collecting three of these gives the player a “Super Power-up” which they can use to wreak havoc on the level. Collecting additional crystal shards increases the power of the Super Power-up, up to a maximum of nine shards. Levels and StagesThe levels are broken into ten stages of ten levels each. At the end of each stage, the bat’s speed, magnet strength and magnet charge can be upgraded by spending tokens which can be collected along the way. Completing a stage unlocks the next stage for future playing sessions. Cooperative Multiplayer GameThe Cooperative Multiplayer game allows two players to cooperate across the single player game, both on Xbox Live and on the same console. The arena is split in two, with each player controlling a bat on one half. Each player starts with their own ball. The players share the timer and bonus multiplier meters. When playing on the same console, the camera stays static, one player taking the top half of the arena (their controls reversing as appropriate), the other taking the bottom. Over Xbox Live, each player will see it from the perspective of them being at the bottom half of the screen. Battle Mode Multiplayer GameIn Battle Mode, the two players compete over a selection of specially-designer Battle Mode levels. Battle Mode is available on the same console and over Xbox Live. The screen is divided as in Cooperative mode. Each player has their own time bar and their own colour-coded ball. The players lose time if they allow their own ball to strike their half of the arena, or if they are hit by their opponent’s ball. Between the players are respawning bricks which act both as a barrier between the two and as a means for gathering power-ups to help their attack on the other player. The power-ups made available are slightly different to suit competitive play. |
